Week in Review
I love the middle of the week to get after my fitness goals. Usually it is a day I teach a fitness class at a gym in my community and I also get the pleasure of training my longtime clients are active adults striving to stay strong in the mind/body as they go through some of nature’s challenges. Nevertheless, it is rewarding to see people achieve goals, move their bodies more efficiently, and strive to stay healthy.
This week the fitness industry celebrates their “Super Bowl” of fitness conferences with the 2014 IDEA World Fitness conference in Anaheim, Ca. Over thousands of fitness professionals, gym managers, health industry experts, exercise enthusiasts, fitness bloggers, healthcare practitioners, renowned public speakers, international fitness presenters, athletic apparel lines, music distributors, food vendors, fitness celebrities…. the list goes on and basically anybody who is anybody making an impact in the health and fitness industry, attends this 5 day conference. This comprehensive annual event is geared to deliver all the latest information, trends, products, and workouts for advancing the health, fitness, and nutritional industries that can affect people all over the world. As a fitness/health reporter it would be very ideal to cover this event to report the most exciting advances and news in the fitness and wellness industries, including personal training, group fitness, nutrition, indoor cycling, mind-body classes, and business development. Next year if the conference returns to Downtown LA, I would be interested in covering the event as a freelance journalist and conduct interviews with leading experts in the fitness industry that are highly well known and are seen as a celebrity in the fitness field. Names like Jillian Michaels and Tony Horton are now just as famous as those faces seen in the glossies. But they are getting recognized for their work in helping America shape up. Another benefit to covering the IDEA conference is helping to educate the public or your audience about the most current trends in fitness classes, nutrition, the evolution of yoga, pilates and other specialized mind-body disciplines, technology applications to track and measure fitness goals, as well as educate other medical professionals about the impact leaders in the fitness profession can make on a life. Fuel Your Passion
It is very fitting that the theme to this year’s IDEA 2014 event is titled, “Fuel Your Passion.” In this context, passion is defined as a “strong feeling or excitement about doing something.” Passionate fitness professionals and enthusiasts gather at the conference to discuss, share, instruct, and motivate others about the benefits of adopting or maintaining fitness into a regular lifestyle. For me one of my big passions in the fitness industry is indoor cycling on a Schwinn bike. Now in my humble opinion, if you are to take a indoor cycle class, it should feel like riding a bike outdoors. No need to lift light handweights, resistance bars, or bands, or any other “gimmicks,” just ride a bike the way a bike should be rode, pedal your legs and your body will begin to feel the workout. It’s very basic, but very challenging, if you turn the resistance knob correctly. Even without having much experience riding outdoors, many of the same principles apply. Indoor cycling is very popular and I am proud to be be certified by SPINNING Mad Dogg Athletics that was originally started by Johnny G, in the ’90s who brought the popular concept of group fitness classes to boutique studios and large chain health clubs all over the world. However, Spinning® has come a long way in the industry and other brands of developed their own trainings and bikes to accommodate the needs for implicating group indoor cycle class in fitness centers. A standout certifying agency in this world of group cycle fitness is Schwinn Fitness. At IDEA 2014, Schwinn presents many certifying seminars, workshops and specialty rides. I have attended many of these workshops and have gone through the 8 hour certification training course twice. I found it to be of extreme value to always learn new techniques applied to the bio mechanics and science behind coaching exercise intensity for achieving fitness goals, motivating coaching techniques designed to engage and empower participants of all fitness levels to enjoy the indoor cycle workout, and creating memorable rides that leave participants fulfilled with their exercise experience through song selections utilizing a variety of musical genres. I feel blessed to be able to work with such an esteemed group of group fitness colleagues at Equinox, who are master trainers for Schwinn. I gain so much insight on a regular basis from taking and often times subbing their cycle classes, while they are leading coaching seminars for other instructors across the world. IDEA conferences are a great place to get inspired by the Schwinn team and elevate your skills for coaching indoor cycle classes or to enjoy a memorable ride to fuel your passion for this fun way of getting fit for life. There is so much inspiration to gain at these fitness conferences. Over 180 presenters in the fitness industry will be on hand delivering over 360 workshops and workouts sessions on topics ranging from group fitness classes, yoga, pilates, dance, barre fitness, personal training, TRX, Kettlebells, business, social media, and technology. All kinds of fitness brands are showcasing their new equipment models, apparel, music, nutrition, products, goods and services to mass consumers at the expo hall.
Connect The Fitness Community
Estimated amount of attendees is expected to be about 12,000 for IDEA 2014! That’s huge and makes you realize the fitness community is booming. A lot of opportunities to help change and inspire people to get fit for life. Next year my goal is to participate the in the fitness blogging community and attend the IDEA blog fest to network with other bloggers and create compelling articles and effective concepts for marketing myself as a brand. This was an example of a talented fitness bloggers, ladies much like myself who are passionate about healthy living and inspiring others to live life fit. Flashback January 13, 2013. Rise and shine for a special two hour Pilates workshop at The Pilates Institute of Southern California in Manhattan Beach with my teacher’s teacher, Cara Reeser, who visited from Colorado to share her first hand knowledge of working underneath a Pilates elder Kathy Stanford Grant (aka protege ) who was trained directly by Joseph H. Pilates (the founder of the popular mind/body fitness method), more about dear Joe and his method in future blogs. But to keep this budding romance story interesting, I went to this empowering Pilates class and gained a vast wealth of inspiration and a deeper understanding about teaching the Pilates method to clients. So by noon that day I was ready to teach what I learned from Cara to anyone who would let me. Problem was I couldn’t teach immediately, I mean I had to wait 24 hours until my next class at the gym and I promised my longtime best friends M and D, I would attend their housewarming luncheon that starts at noon. So off to see friends and visit their new house…..in the suburbs! For years, M & D lived nearby me and we enjoyed a fun lifestyle in a seaside community, all while working hard at pursuing our different careers respectively. As their family was growing with baby #2 it was time to expand. So after the holidays, they moved and wanted to throw a party for their friends to celebrate a new home and an addition to the family. So far the highlight of the party for me was bonding with their firstborn daughter a vivacious toddler, I nickname, “Tender” on the swing set. Swinging along swimmingly went well for about 20 minutes until Tender starts crying, pointing to a tall handsome man talking to her mom. “Big Man, Auntie, big man,” cries Tender and I am calming her down to no avail and wondering who is M, so engaged in conversation with and can she hurry over here to make baby happy? Finally, my friend collects her daughter and introduces me to her hubby’s good buddy from college, JB. Right, JB the former USC football player, who stands close to 7 feet TALL! I didn’t even recognize him since I saw him last at their wedding 4 years prior, and before that was 2.5 years earlier, when he helped me at a 2007 Labor Day party with installing my ipod for my car radio before I traveled to work at a new broadcast journalism job the next day. So memory served me well and I didn’t feel like such a fool remembering my friend’s friend and trying to console a young child. I told Tender “JB is a nice man, friend of her daddy’s and he likes to play ball.” And right then, the three of us played a game of catch with Tender’s toys, to which her tears vanished. Before JB played catch up on our whereabouts, he proudly told me of the gym he belongs too and how a healthy lifestyle has shaped his weight loss transformation. This is where I equate the corporate motto of one of my employers to “lovemadedoit” now that is not the marketing slogan this company uses but if you Google the large fitness chain I work for and check out their viral social media campaign, we who visit the club to workout “do it” “it” that makes a person thrive and confidently propels them to take risks and chances to live a healthy life by visiting the club. JB spoke with confidence, passion, and pride about his workouts and the choice to stay “fit for life.” So when he inquired about what I do for work, well the sparks flew. Our friends saw it before we did, in fact Tender laughed at us talking near the swing sets as if no one else was in sight. Our friends encouraged us to go on a car ride together around the block and it was kinda of awkward. I remembered what Cara talked about a lot in mat class earlier that day and it was to do something radical and be open to change not just in your exercise regimen but in all parts of life. So it’s a new year and nothing was holding me back from being inspired, uplifted, and adding a new “friend” into my life. By the time I took my seat belt off, our phone numbers were exchanged. Quick cordial hug goodbye and I sensed JB was a really nice guy. Unsure of if I will see him again or not but anything can happen…and something did. It has been continuing on until present day, 18 months strong. Took a few weeks to flourish, and being together each time was more exciting and fun. JB has enriched my life in the best ways possible and I am excited for the future we are planning together. To take that risk of falling in love again and be open to some sort of change is a challenge but the reward is so well worth it. Timing was everything. We both grew-up separately and also maintain the importance of growing together for the betterment of our relationship. I thank divine spirits. I thank the passage of time for setting us up at a certain stage in life. I thank M & D for throwing the parties of where we met. I thank Tender for her “tall man tears.” I thank the company I am happy to teach fitness classes for bring about a strong like-minded community outside the gym atmosphere to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I thank all our friends and family who are supportive of our happiness. And that is a choice, happiness! I choose it and on days when you want to hate on the world but wouldn’t dare say so literally, and no one is perfect. I still choose happiness. and love. Making this relationship thrive is a job I love having, and no other than “love” influences all my decisions for sharing a life with my tall man and the work that I do to help others feel fit for life.
Bringing life to a new blog and unleashing my inner Anne Lamott (my favorite non-fiction autobiographical writer). Been a long time coming, but technological bloopers blocked me from blogging. Tonight, I bite the bullet … overcame my fear of WordPress, and decided to just go for it, and write with reckless abandon. Just getting my writers feet wet here, but one must start somewhere in the VIRTUAL WORLD. A virgin in the virtual world! Hopefully, not for much longer. Here is my favorite coming out photo, why I choose to post this one in particular is because I traveled to a foreign land, and overcame long held fears that have stunted my relationships professionally and personally. Banishing these demons through daily diary sessions- cheaper than therapy, yoga classes, Balinese cultural excursions, dance parties (we yogini’s know how to get down in a villa owned by musician Michael Franti), and female bonding amongst new friends while swimming in the Indian Ocean, drinking wine, hiking, shopping, or admiring a sacred Hindu temple. It’s been almost 2 years since I went on that retreat to Bali over Thanksgiving weekend in 2012. Through that process, I conquered an anxiety about traveling abroad solo. I pushed the pause button on my life of teaching fitness classes at several Southern California gyms during a busy week when I could easily pick up teaching more fitness classes to increase my weekly earnings, as most regular instructors were off on holiday vacation. I left my familiar traditions of Thanksgiving celebration dinners with family friends, my Aunt Yetta, and visiting with out of town friends from high school or college…to share in the nontraditional Balinese “Gratitude Feast” with a group for interesting women from different walks of life many miles away from our homeland. Besides my yoga teacher Jen Pastiloff, we also teach fitness classes (she, yoga. me, Pilates and other sweaty stuff to elevate the heart rate) at the same gym together in LA, I virtually knew no one prior to getting my passport issued to join me on this trip. However, that was the point of going away to create some new memories and meet new people from across the globe. We may not have all stayed in touch, but its nice to know when I reflect back on this life changing experience that others can share in the bliss of Bali as well, near and afar. The major significance to this self-journey yoga retreat was that I truly made peace with situations from my past that did not bring me luck in the love department. I wrote letters of gratitude (hence the Thanksgiving theme) to old romances of what once was and fully accepted that it will never be a lifelong thing with any of the men I dated, slept with, and loved at this point in my 32-year-old life. It was heavy but I left all the blues about my broken heart out on a rice paddy. Letting go felt so cleansing, and I felt renewed to learn that these lessons were a push in the right direction for spiritual growth. Saying goodbye to the emotions and attachments was not an easy task. Yet to truly forgive all who I felt hurt me and accept my responsibility of being an imperfect partner in the past was no easy task, but in hindsight, it was the biggest blessing ever to peal off the bandages of those long term wounds to embrace true healing.
I also manifested a new relationship, different than the ones I had ever experience before, and with someone who would share similar, but different characteristics of what I found most attracted to in a man. Well, 8 weeks later, lo and behold, the universe brought this man back into my life after meeting 7 and 4 years prior. Whaaaat???? Sometimes the person who you are searching to meet, may have been standing next to you in a picture at your friend’s wedding in a photo album, collecting dust on your coffee table for the past 4 years. The funny thing is, I am not sure if divine intervention played a role in re-acquainting us or third time was really the charm of finally clicking chemistry wise– in the OFFLINE world. Life is funny that way and keep reading my blog to find out about the many things and one person who now captures my heart. Or at least how listening to that “gut instinct” or “little voice” inside the head really does work. My mind and heart for once, in years of dating, were aligned and repeatedly said, “GO FOR IT!” when being courted. Until the next time, I am propelled to jot down some more thoughts, I am going back to my offline world, speak with my love in person, because human contact between man and woman is very necessary to sustain a relationship in the modern age, and try to not get too overwhelmed with navigating all this virtual insanity of uncovering the ‘blogosphere’ world. P.S. My grandmother or “Nana” Millie (Mom’s mom) was from TN, so sometimes I like to say “ya’ll” to pay homage of her upbringing in the South.
Happy Days is where it all started. The TV show from the ’70s and ’80s, inspired my parents to not name me, “Lindsay Brooke Allen,” but instead be called, “Lori Beth Allen,” all because of Richie Cunningham’s girlfriend/wife on the show. The actress Lynda Goodfriend, who played this character had a name that got my parents to change their minds over a name they liked for 9 months. And well being a ‘Lori Beth Allen’ can often times have its share of complications. Have I been indecisive at times, and second guess my choices sometimes? Definitely. The downsides of being born in June under the zodiac sign of Gemini. A sign of the twin and a personality that has many faces. But one thing is for sure I know what keeps me constantly grounded and peaceful from the inside out, and that is my love for fitness and healthy living. Even an indulgence every so often feeds the soul’s spirit. Keep it balanced and why regret what you enjoyed from the pleasure is my philosophy. So what makes my days the most happiest is that I can help others lead a healthier lifestyle for them to move more stronger. In order for folks to live longer with less ‘dis-ease’ and help them turn negative emotions into active motions for making a positive change requires a clear mindset and a support system socially. The power of group fitness brings the fun into fitness when you and friends can sweat and squeeze muscles together. The smiles shared after a group session is priceless : )! The onset of pain limits folks to fully move at their full range of motion in their muscles, bones, and joints. As a fitness professional, my goal is to train clients to complete their workouts in a functional way for increasing the bodies ability to maintain a consistent challenge of strengthening muscles to create strength, endurance, and flexibility3-dimensionally from head to toe.This website is to promote living out your most happiest of days in total mind/body health. I included a picture of the first Lori Beth Allen, to remind me that “Happy Days” is why I am here to sweat, strengthen, and stretch on this joyous journey of life.
